What is DSE Training:

DSE Training is a legal requirement for anyone who regularly uses display screen equipment. Our DSE Training helps you work towards compliance with The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 and helps DSE users avoid RSI, headaches, eyestrain and back problems; all of which are proven to contribute to absenteeism

Workstations and Assessment

If workers use display screen equipment (DSE) daily, and continuously as part of their normal work,

Employers should look at:

  • the whole workstation, including equipment, furniture, and work conditions
  • the job being done
  • any special requirements of a member of staff, for example, a user with a disability

Where there are risks, they should take steps to reduce them.

Employers must also do an assessment when:

  • a new workstation is set up
  • a new user starts work
  • a change is made to an existing workstation or the way it’s used
  • users complain of pain or discomfort

Back Pain

Learning and maintaining good posture is one of the best ways to prevent back and neck pain. Remember the spine is not naturally straight: rather it has  natural curves both slightly forward (in the lumbar region) and backward (in the thoracic region)

Back pain may occur as a consequence of excessive wear and tear, incorrect posture, incorrect lifting techniques (see manual handling blog) prolonged physical work, being overweight, lack of fitness, or underlying medical issues.

Reducing the risks from display screen work

  • Breaking up long spells of DSE work with rest breaks (at least 5 minutes every hour) or changes in activity
  • Avoiding awkward, static postures by regularly changing position
  • Getting up and moving or doing stretching exercises
  • Avoiding eye fatigue by changing focus or blinking from time to time
